interleukin-1¥á
Mouse mature interleukin-1¥á (IL-1¥á) is a 17 kDa protein cleaved from a leaderless 31 kDa precursor. In mice, IL-1¥á is produced primarily by lymphocytes and macrophages. The IL-1¥á is encoded by a gene family composed of IL-1¥á, IL-1¥â, and IL-1R¥á in a chromosome.
They are produced by alternative splicing of RNA. When stimulated with bacterial endotoxin and other pathogens, mRNA of IL-1¥á is present within 15 minutes. IL-1¥á plays an active role in signal transduction through its receptor, IL-1R which is shared with other IL-1 molecules. Recombinant IL-1¥á generated in E. coli has similar biological functions in response to infectious assaults.
The recombinant IL-1¥á generated in E. coli is nonglycosylated and is used as antigen to immunize mice.
